Our Christmas gift to you

christmas gift of giving joy stress reduction Dec 09, 2020
tis the season to be Joyful

Tis the season to be Joyful.

But this year the Grinch kind of stole Christmas.

So what is there to be Joyful about you wonder?

I don't blame you.

However, I am hoping I can change your mind. I'll tell you why :

Even though we don't have any control over the imposed regulations that have far reaching consequences for us, what we do have control over is how we stand in all of this. How do we respond to crises in our daily life?

Joy helps de-activate the stress response.

When you hear the bad news that more restrictions for an extended period of time are being imposed on you, your whole body immediately shifts into fight, flight, or fright mode. All the brain hears is this message: "Danger- danger”

This is a natural response that happens in all living beings. It is a primal response.

But we are more than just the sum of our primal responses.

It is quite normal and understandable to feel sad, angry, fear, anxiety, insecurity, disappointment, depression or frustration after hearing the bad news.

You may feel helpless, hopeless, and a deep sense of loss. Loss of control, loss of agency. Definitely loss of human connection and maybe even loss of income. The initial reaction is hard to avoid. It is a shock.

We have been in shock, globally, for close to a year now. That has a HUGE impact on our mental, emotional, and physical health.

Let me emphasize how important it is to acknowledge this. Humanity is suffering and it is a tragedy.

But, we do NOT have to be victims of this crisis.

It is your responsibility to take charge over your emotions and modify this primal stress response intentionally.

Technically, what you are doing is turning on your parasympathetic nervous system, which turns your sympathetic nervous system (stress response) off.

"How do you do that?”

Good Question!

There are many ways to shift the stress response. Today I'm going to promote 'making a connection with Joy'.

Imagine you have a special battery in your heart that you can charge with Joy. What would it require for you to fully charge this battery?

You would have to take full responsibility for how you feel and make it your #1 priority to feel better.

It is important to note that:

  • Joy is an inside job- it doesn't require any special conditions to experience it.
  • Joy is not a result, that is a myth. Joy is the cause of a positive feeling not the effect of a positive outside condition.

How can you charge your battery with joy?
